SUMMARY:Silver State Classic Challenge - 2025
DESCRIPTION:Silver State Classic Challenge – 2025\nFor the past three decades\, driving enthusiasts from around the world have gathered on the third Sunday September in the Nevada high desert for the one of the truly most unique automotive events. Traverse 90 to 120 miles of closed\, two-lane public highway\, comprised of long fast straights\, sweeping corners\, blind dips\, even carving through a twisty canyon. The current course record stands at 219.6430 mph average speed\, as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. The best part is\, if you’ve got the nerve\, a little cash\, and a fast ride\, you too can join them to run as fast as you can\, legally\, down a public highway. \nThe SSCC in September is our classic 90-mile\, one-way event\, with additional activities held in Ely\, and the SSCC awards banquet after-party is held at the historic Sam’s Town Casino Hotel in fabulous Las Vegas\, Nevada. \n\nThursday:\nCars will be showing up in town for registration. Enjoy and watch them cruise!\n\n\nFriday:\nParade of cars through the downtown at 5:30pm\n\n\nSaturday:\nCar show and judging at Broadbent Park\, 9:00am-1:00pm\n\n\nSunday:\nHWY 318 closes at 5:00am and doesn’t open until 4:00pm. Become a course worker!!!\n\n\nThe Silver State Classic Challenge\, Inc. is a non-profit corporation with a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors and staff who annually host the Nevada Open Road Challenge (NORC) and Silver State Classic Challenge (SSCC) Open Road Racing events on a closed section of Nevada State Highway 318\, renamed by the Nevada Department of Transportation as the Silver State Classic Challenge Highway. \nSSCC events are based on time\, speed\, and distance. Classes begin at 95 mph\, and increase in 5 mph increments up through the 160 mph class\, with a 170 mph\, 180 mph\, and an Unlimited\, top speed class. Vehicles start one at a time\, in one minute intervals against a GPS timing clock\, and attempt to break the beam at the finish line as close as possible to their speed class target time. First\, Second and Third place trophies are awarded to the Driver and Navigator/Co-driver in each class\, based on most accurate elapsed time targets achieved\, as measured by SSCC timing equipment. Trophies are also awarded to drivers of our companion One-Mile and Half-Mile Shootout events\, both held on race weekends in conjunction with our Open Road Racing events. \nAll first-time SSCC participants are considered rookies\, and may enter classes ranging from 95 mph up to 110 mph\, determined by their vehicle capabilities and safety equipment\, and each Driver and Navigator/Co-Driver’s comfort level. All rookies must also attend an SSCC rookie driver school. Those with documented Open Road Racing or other equivalent racing experience\, or those who hold racing licenses from select sanctioned racing bodies\, may be eligible to obtain a waiver from rookie school. \nAll Details and Qualification Information About This Even Can Be Found HERE!\nKnow Where You'll Stay! SUMMARY:9th Annual Race the Rails
DESCRIPTION:9th Annual Race the Rails\nThe steam locomotive and the bicycle were invented nearly 10 years apart. Both changed the way we travel\, but which will prevail on September 6th at the 9th Annual Race the Rails?! \nAt the sound of the train whistle\, mountain and road bikers race to see who can get back to the depot before the train. \nMountain bikers and gravel grinders test their speed and agility on a challenging 10-mile course through the beautiful mountains surrounding Ely. Road bikers prove their speed and endurance on a 25-mile course along roads and highway sin the area. Everyone who finishes the course will receive a finishers medal. \nThis is not a regular race against time\, or your fellow riders. It’s a race against one of history’s most powerful inventions! It’s a Race the Rails – 2025! \nRegister for the Race the Rails HERE! \nEly is a remote mountain town of 4\,000 where history\, art\, and outdoor adventure run deep. In the nearby Great Basin National Park\, travelers have the chance to descend into the depths of the Lehman Cave system to explore a series of limestone and marble caverns full of huge stalagmites and other wild rock formations. The park is also home to the snow-capped Wheeler Peak which\, at 13\,000 feet\, is the second-tallest mountain in Nevada. \nLearn more about Ely and White Pine County HERE!

SUMMARY:Tour de Schell
DESCRIPTION:Tour de Schell\nFresh off of the release of the new Ely Gravel Adventure Field Guide\, The Rotary Club of Ely is excited to expand gravel cycling in Nevada by producing the inaugural Tour de Schell.\n\nA gravel race through Nevada’s copper country. Cyclists will get the option to choose from 3 routes that will showcase some of the finest gravel in Nevada.\n\nDistances include:\nLong Distance 118 mi. 5\,438 ft of gain\nMedium Distance 81mi. 4\,084 ft of gain\nShort Distance 64mi. 3\,575 ft of gain.\n\nGPS of the routes and maps coming soon.\n\nParticipants will be treated to western hospitality on and off the course with food\, drinks\, music\, and activities at the event and things to do throughout the community all weekend.\n\nFor the complete Race Guide with all the information you will need to maximize your enjoyment at this event\, click HERE!\n\nTo access the maps of routes and elevation profiles for the 3 different categories\, click HERE!\n\nThis event comes right off the tails of the recently released Ely Gravel Adventure Field Guide. The first Gravel Adventure Field Guide in the state of Nevada has been long awaited.\n\n\nPer Gravel Adventure Field Guide: \n“The Basin and Range landscape of eastern Nevada represents one of the last frontiers within the ever-evolving American West. Imposing peaks between long stretches of valley floors have served as barriers to large scale development. A nineteenth-century Pony Express rider in White Pine County saw hard days of unforgiving miles. Their courage and determination lives on in the spirit of Nevadan generations that have followed. \nToday\, approximately 80 percent of the old Pony Express Trail travels through Nevada public lands. Over the years\, natural-resource development and recreational access have helped open the Basin and Range of White Pine County to economic opportunity and tourism. The county’s remote location continues to offer adventurers the chance to escape the trappings of modern life and experience the benefits of living\, working\, and playing in a truly rural setting. \nWith the town of Ely leading the way\, off-road adventure riding is helping the communities of White Pine County reimagine themselves. Miles of unpaved roads\, along with trail development\, have rekindled the gritty Old West spirit that gives eastern Nevada an edge as the region seeks to balance the booms-and-busts of years past. Gravel enthusiasts are part of this solution-based approach.” \nThe Ely Gravel Adventure Field Guide is available at the Bristlecone Convention Center in Ely\, NV. Or pick up yours at any of favorite bike shops in the west! \nLearn more about the Ely Gravel Adventure Field Guide and prepare for Tour de Schell HERE! \n \n \n\nThe other Ely gravel race of the year is our annual Race the Rails! SUMMARY:Nevada Open Road Challenge 2025
DESCRIPTION:Nevada Open Road Challenge 2025\nFor the past three decades\, driving enthusiasts from around the world have gathered on the third Sunday of May in the Nevada high desert for the one of the truly most unique automotive events. \nThis event in May is a two-way event\, totaling 119.78 miles (59.89 each way)\, with a weekend packed full of gearhead activities\, and an awards banquet after-party held in our charming\, rustic mining town of Ely\, Nevada. Registration packet pickup will be held in Ely\, Nevada. \nThe Silver State Classic Challenge\, Inc. is a non-profit corporation with a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors and staff who annually host the Nevada Open Road Challenge (NORC) and Silver State Classic Challenge (SSCC) Open Road Racing events on a closed section of Nevada State Highway 318\, renamed by the Nevada Department of Transportation as the Silver State Classic Challenge Highway. \nAll Details and Qualifications About This Event Can Be Found HERE!\nDiscover More of What White Pine County Offers HERE!

SUMMARY:National Travel and Tourism Week
DESCRIPTION:National Travel and Tourism Week\nNational Tourism Week is celebrated in the first week of May. This year\, that means it takes place from May 4th to 10th. \nIt is a week to remind everyone of the importance of traveling and seeking some kind of escape from normalcy.\, There is some truth to saying “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy\,” and traveling is an opportunity to make our lives more fun. \nThis week is also meant to celebrate the travel and tourism industry that strives to create memorable experiences for tourists. It provides everyone an opportunity to reflect on how tourism helps boost the economy an highlights local cultures. \nFind More info about this week from the National Organization themselves HERE!\n\nFind Things to Do in White Pine County for National Tourism Week HERE!\nHistory of National Tourism Week\nTourism began with the idea of the Pilgrimage\, originating in Eastern civilizations before spreading to Western. About 2\,000 years ago\, there were many pilgrimages to the early Buddhist sites\, around what we currently know to be Nepal. Pilgrimages to Mecca were also a popular ritual that is still practiced to this day. \nIn the west\, the custom of pilgrimage began to flourish from about 1660\, and with the invention of different modes of transport\, they followed a standard itinerary. This custom was seen as an educational opportunity and a rite of passage. This was reserved for the British nobility and wealthy landed gentry. \nIn the 18th century\, after the invention of the railway\, the Grand Tour became a popular tourist activity for upper-class students. The Grand Tour offered a journey to cultural sites in France\, Germany\, and Italy. Over the next few years\, the tour encompassed many other European sites. \nBy the 19th century\, journeys for health\, leisure\, and culture became common practice among the European middle classes and were ways for them to gain cultural capital. On these trips\, people could socialize and also show their social standing. During this time\, tourists got used to using guidebooks and travel companies that created itineraries. Tourism also brought about the development of art and souvenir markets\, as well as transport and accommodation systems\, like hotels and lodging. \nFrom the 20th century onward\, shipping lines also promoted international tourism. They encouraged tourists to take cruises and travel from the Norwegian fjords to the Caribbean. Between the World Wars\, many upper-class Americans traveled by air and sea to a variety of destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America.

SUMMARY:Race the Rails 2023
DESCRIPTION:Race the Rails 2023\nThe steam locomotive and the bicycle were invented nearly 10 years apart. Both changed the way we travel\, but which will prevail on September 9th at the Race The Rails? At the sound of the train whistle\, mountain and road bikers race to see who can get back to the depot before the train. \nMountain bikers test their speed and agility on a challenging 10 mile course through the beautiful mountains surrounding Ely\, while road bikers prove their speed and endurance on a 25 mile course along roads and highways in the area. Everyone who finishes the course will receive a finisher’s medal. \nThis is not a regular race against time\, or your fellow riders. It’s a race against one of histories most powerful inventions! It’s Race the Rails – 2023!\nRegister for Race the Rails 2023 HERE! \nSee what Ely offers in lodging by clicking HERE! \nFollow Updates on Our Facebook HERE!
